April 2005 Dear friend of KHCS,
The battle over evolution still rages ─ a sticker in a schoolbook
stating that evolution is only a theory is declared “an unconstitutional
establishment of religion.” Efforts to have Intelligent Design taught
in schools alongside the theory of evolution are struck down as
“anti-scientific.”
The claim so often made by evolutionists is that “evolution is
science; creationism is just religion.” This flies in the face of the
fact that there is no real evidence for evolution; all of the supposed
“missing links” have proven to be misrepresentations of the fossil
evidence or outright frauds.
Even famed evolutionist Dr. Louis S.B. Leakey declared: “It is simply
not possible to conceive that the whole of creation is just an
accident. Almost all of us at the top of science realize that there
must be some superior force, whether God, nature or X; it’s a design, a
pattern, a guiding, controlling power.” You see? Even an evolutionist
believed in “intelligent design!”
What is at stake now is not science vs. religion. This concerns our
understanding of the fundamental nature of reality itself. Is reality
limited to our material universe, or is there more? Perhaps a spiritual
universe? Many prominent scientists have believed this, like Dr. Gustaf
Strömberg, the late director of Mt. Wilson Observatory, who said: “I
believe that behind the physical world we see with our eyes and study in
our microscopes and telescopes, and measure with instruments of various
kinds, is another, more fundamental realm which cannot be described in
physical terms.”
The great physicist, Max Planck, has stated: “Modern Physics
impresses us particularly with the truth of the old doctrine which
teaches that there are realities existing apart from our
sense-perceptions, and that there are problems and conflicts where these
realities are of greater value for us than the richest treasures of the
world of experience.”
And Arthur March, Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University
of Innsbruck, Austria, wrote: “It is possible, for example, that in
addition to the three dimensions of space available to experience, there
is a fourth one involving phenomena that scientists may never get to
know about.”
For a recent book on this subject, I suggest The Elegant Universe by
Brian Greene. Though not a Christian book, it covers current concepts
of theoretical physics, including relativity, quantum theory and
superstring theory.
This issue is not a matter of ignorant, unscientific Christians
unwilling to come to grips with Science. It does very much concern the
values of academic freedom and the spirit of scientific inquiry, now
that questioning “scientific” dogma is struck down with such ferocity as
only occurred during the Dark Ages. As a Chinese scientist quipped, “In
China we can criticize Darwin but not the government. But in America
you can criticize the government but not Darwin.”
And, during the 1925 Scopes trial, the ACLU argued that “teaching
only one theory of origins (i.e. creation) is bigotry.” Why is it not
bigotry still to teach only one theory of origins—evolution? Or as Paul
warned Timothy, “science, falsely so called.” (1 Tim. 6:20)
